My Story

Hi I'm Rob Heyes, a singer-songwriter from the North of England, now based in Melbourne, Australia. I write modern English folk music. I'm currently promoting my debut album: Pales with Grace with live performances in and around Melbourne.

Growing up in Bury I was greatly influenced by the singer-songwriters of the 1960's and 70's such as Tom Waits, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Donovan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney as well as rock groups such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I started playing guitar and writing songs in my late teens. But when study and work took over, I put my music on the back burner.

In my 30's I spent several years with various voice coaches, sang in cover bands, performed in stage musicals such as Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance and developed my solo style by playing covers of the acoustic artists that I had listened to in my youth along with more modern bands such as Coldplay, The Decemberists, Travis and Stereophonics.

Arriving in Melbourne in my early 40's I hooked up with my mentor and friend, Suzie Dickinson. Suzie helped me fully develop my playing style and encouraged me to start writing songs again. Suzie also introduced me to award winning producer and songwriter Dave Flett.

At its heart, Pales with Grace is an acoustic album with each track drawing on a range of folk, rock, country and pop influences to give it a unique sound.
