These are some of my favourite lyrics. I wrote them during a period when I was out of work. They reflect a state of mind I was trying to avoid rather than one I was in.

Capo 4

Am                   Em                    G                            Am
Outside it’s a warm day but he’s made plans to stay inside.
Am                       Em                            G                       Am
It’s high time to make hay but he falls prey to his lies.
Am                         G                             D                    Am
He’s all kinds of small reasons to hesitate in his stride,
Am                      Em                            Dm7    Dm
A patience for calm dread when a firm tread would be wise.

A boy in a sharp suit pulls his tie loose to appease the strain.
His watch says it’s past eight but he’ll work late all the same.
Back then he’d a fierce yearning to push himself through the pain.
The last bus at midnight cuts a lone flight through the rain.

He sits for a long while, wears a faint smile that he guards throughout.
A tenure of twelve years now his worst fears have come about.
Some well-chosen, stale reasons that put his world into doubt.
The speeches say: “Thanks for… close the door on your way out”.

Dm7                                             Am
Every time you choose the fray
F                                      C            G
Every time you lose a play you keep trying, trying.

Outside it’s a warm day but he’s made plans to stay inside.
It’s high time to make hay but he falls prey to his lies.
He’s all kinds of small reasons to hesitate in his stride,              Em          Am     Em            Am    Em             Am
A patience for calm dread when a firm tread would be wise….. would be wise, would be wise, would be wise.
